2023 Week 2 NFL Picks

Updated: Sep 17, 2023

Week 1 is done and it sure was excellent. I was right about the Chargers/Dolphins game being incredibly entertaining. One thing I did think about while sitting on my couch taking in all of the games was how much time it really takes to watch football. I complain about baseball being too long and yet I sat there from 1pm until basically 8 doing almost nothing but watch football. I didn’t even drink beer because I had to work in the morning. It really makes you wonder about your life. Not enough to change anything, but the thought was there.

Putting my useless ponderings aside, let’s have a look at how we did in Week 1.

Week 1 Records

Blind Owl: 8-8

Concret3Cowboy: 8-8

BrendawnoftheDead: 10-6

What’s this? All of us were .500 or above in Week 1? I’m not sure what's more shocking, that, or the fact that Brendawn won a week with a 10-6 record. I’d call this a banner week for the BO Blogs football picks. The only real question is can we do so well again. I have my doubts, but let’s dive right in with Thursday Night Football.

MIN @ PHI: PHI -6

Blind Owl: I couldn’t believe the Vikings lost to Tampa. Tampa isn’t as bad as a team like Arizona, but they aren’t good. What happened was just typical Minnesota though. They come in with high hopes and just fall flat. Meanwhile, Philly almost crapped their pants against the Patriots. They covered and everything but it wasn’t the domination it should have been. Two under achieving Week 1 teams square off in everyone’s least favorite night of football screams blow out to me. Oh, and by the way, it’s in primetime, so I predict Captain Kirk crumbling and the Eagles winning by 8 or more.

Concret3Cowboy: Philly absolutely broke the brakes off the Vikings last season in week 2.. After Minnesota beat the Pack in their season opener. I want to pick the Vikings to cover, and I will. Why? As a Kirk Cousins fantasy owner, I am well aware of his turnovers in week 1. Without those, the Vikings beat the Bucs pretty well. But like I warned in week 1, the Vike squad is just destined to disappoint and who would I be to not give them a chance to do just that, by not picking them to cover here against the Eagles. Don’t put your money here if you like stable 401ks with stable, predictable growth.

BrendawnoftheDead: Philly… this one is simple. Philly 's strength is on their defensive line, Minnesota's weakness is their offensive line. Captain Kirk is going to be hurting after this one. Jefferson will get his, but it won't matter. Look for Hurts to be the Quarterback he was a year ago. Eagles win handily.

WAS @ DEN: DEN -3.5

Blind Owl: Last week was kind of embarrassing as a Denver fan. But, I remain hopeful. Wilson didn’t look as horrible as last year, but it is still a work in progress. Washington isn’t great and this a quick test to see if the Broncos talent can beat who they’re supposed to, or if they’ll go back to last year. Hesitantly, I’ll take my Broncos, but I’m worried again.

Concret3Cowboy: I’m taking Washington so I don’t have to double lose on Sunday. JK! It’s too early for that mindset. Rus still stunk throwing for 177 yards and another 16 point game. At the same time, Juedy coming back will be nice (if he can catch a ball). Another fucking lose to the Raiders is a real kick in the guts, I didn’t listen to or watch anything Broncos leading up to this week so I don’t really know what could happen. I hope Denver can do something here, two losses at home to start the season would really turn me off.

BrendawnoftheDead: I don't love this one, neither teams impressed last week and I can't help but feel they are both bound for mediocrity at best. I have more faith in Denver to win as I think they are better, but they also love playing and losing close games. Their offense does little to inspire confidence and I'm not sold on Sean Payton being able to fix it. The commies inspire even less on offense, but they have the excuse of being in a rebuild. I'm kicking myself already, but I'll take Denver. This isn't monetary advice so don't take it as such.

MIA @ NE: MIA -2.5

Blind Owl: New England fans will hate me, but I think the Patriots’ offensive performance last week had more to do with the Eagles taking their foot off the gas and hurting themselves than Mac Jones being good. I’m not saying he was bad, I’m just saying it wasn’t the renewal I’ve heard about on sports radio. Miami on the other hand went off against a good Chargers team. I think that carries over to New England this week. It may even be a beat down of epic proportions. Dolphins all the way.

Concret3Cowboy: Miami. Maybe if the storm, formally known as Hurricane Lee, was still around and could help the Pats slow things down and turn it into a pound fest but that's not gonna be the case. I’ve never been a Mac Jones fan. He went to Bama, I am a LSU guy. He’s a generic white dude who got drafted by the Patriots. But then, this dude spelt all of last season crying. He’s a turd, I hate his little boyish face. Miami by 10+.

BrendawnoftheDead: I have a feeling NE will find success here. Defensively, NE is much better than the Chargers. They won't stop Tyreek but they won't give him 200 yards either. Miami couldn't stop the run to save their lives, allowing 2 guys to rush for 100+. Rhamondre isn't the same quality receiver as Ekler, but he's a better pure runner. Pats will exploit the Dolphins in the same way as the Chargers, but will force a handful of punts on the other side of the ball. I like them to win outright.

LV @ BUF: BUF -8

Blind Owl: The BIlls got caught in Rodgers hysteria and when he disappeared they lost their minds. They’ll open a can of whoop ass on the Raiders and win by 13.

Concret3Cowboy: Hmmm. Who knows. Josh Allen could have 4 turnovers, or he could have 5 touchdowns. Who. The Hell. Knows. The Raiders have a solid defensive front, but their secondary is bad. Jimmy G is Jimmy G, nothing flashy.. Hell, nothing impressive but he somehow has a team that stays with it. I’m going to go with Buffalo but I don’t like the 8 points but I do like them at home.

BrendawnoftheDead: Josh Allen looked like his former reckless self a week ago. Interceptions, fumbles, and brain dead decisions. The Raiders do not have the same quality of defense and Allen will be playing with something to prove. The Raiders will be sacrificial lambs, sorry team black and silver.

BAL @ CIN: CIN -3

Blind Owl: Holy crap shoot. The AFC North loves to beat up on each other so it’s tough to pick anyone really. Cincy looked rough last week. Were they bad or was Cleveland’s defense just good? Baltimore also didn’t look great and they lost their RB for the year. I just don’t know. This should be a great game to watch. I guess I’ll take the more talented team and go with The Bengals.

Concret3Cowboy: Both these offenses didn’t look good.. No, not even solid in their week 1 games. The Bengals need this more than the Ravens. That is weird to say in a week 2 game but they already fell on their face week 1 against another divisional opponent. I trust Joey B more than Lamar to get the offense together. The only Raven highlight I saw from their offense was OBJ doing Ray Lewis’s intro dance. But three points? Eh, yea give me the Bengals.

BrendawnoftheDead: I don't recall watching a team with so much talent look as incompetent as the Bengals did a week ago. Getting hurt and sitting out the pre season isn't beneficial. The timing is all wrong and rust is a thing. The Ravens didn't exactly look great either but not incompetent. Losing Dobbins for the season hurts, Lamar needs to get on track more than anything. I like the Bengals to bounce back this week because I flipped a coin and that's what it told me.

KC @ JAX: KC -3

Blind Owl: You can’t even imagine how badly I want the Chiefs to be bad. I truly enjoyed the opening day loss. Especially the way it happened. I also like the Jaguars. They’re not the same old Jags of the past. But, unfortunately for the Jags, the king of the OPI Travis Kelce is back. And the abysmal KC receivers won’t have to do much. It’ll be close, but KC will cover.

Concret3Cowboy: I’m not buying the Jaguars’ hype, mostly because I am not into leopard print attire. It was amazing to see how human Mahomes is without an easy target like Kelce in the game. However, here we are about to see him with Kelce suited up again. I want the Swift/Kelce rumors to be true just so we can get a break up song about Kelce when it burns to the ground. KC in this one.

BrendawnoftheDead: My god the Chiefs receivers suck. Kadarius Toney literally had the worst graded game of any receiver since they started keeping track of that stat. Luckily for KC, Kelce is suiting up this week so if nothing else, they will have a quality decoy and RedZone threat. Jacksonville let the Colts, who are a BAD team, hang in there for far too long. If they play that way again, they're looking at a blowout loss. I don't envision that, but I do see KC covering.

LAC @ TEN: LAC -2.5

Blind Owl: The Chargers showed that they had some testicles against Miami. But they are the Chargers and love to disappoint. This won’t be the week though. The Chargers will win easily here.

Concret3Cowboy: I see the Chargers struggling a bit more than they did last week, at least offensively.. Their defense couldn’t struggle more than they did against the Dolphins. The Titans are what they’ve been the last several years, Solid defense, good run game and horrible QB play. Tannehill looked like a McDonald’s cook trying to throw the ball last week. Is he rusty? Titan fans are hoping so but there is just no way the Titans keep pace here with the Chargers offense, no matter how well the Tennessee defense plays.

BrendawnoftheDead: Ryan Tannehill is cooked. The saints have had an underrated defense for a while now, but my god man. I don't like picking the Chargers, they're the Vikings of the AFC (iykyk), but I'm going to. Unless king Henry gets 200 yards from scrimmage, the Titans have no path to victory. They can't score and that's going to be a problem against good offensive teams. Go Bolts

GB @ ATL: ATL -1.5

Blind Owl: I like Atlanta. For some reason. Green Bay impressed me last week though. Hmm. This is almost a pick’em so I’ll go with my gut and take the Falcons.

Concret3Cowboy: I’m so sick of a QB having a decent game versus a shitty franchise (like the Bears) and all the talk about “Oh he’s the franchise guy.” By week 6 we’ll be hearing talk about how do the Packers replace him to get a real franchise QB. The Bears are really bad, especially their defensive line.. That makes it pretty easy for the opposing QB. I like Green Bay’s defense against Ridder. So I’ll take the Pack to win and cover here.

BrendawnoftheDead: Why is Atlanta favored? Both teams defeated unimpressive squads a week ago but GB did it far more convincingly. I still don't know who Desmond Ridder is? I like their run game but that won't be enough. I like the Packers to win this one.

SEA @ DET: DET -5

Blind Owl: I think the whole world except Seattle is hoping for the Lions to explode. I’m with them. Go Lions.

Concret3Cowboy: I miss the days of Detroit being the underdog and being a lock to cover. Lions by 20 here.

BrendawnoftheDead: Eff it, I'm jumping on team Detroit. Campbell is a hardo and I love him for it. Seattle looked bad against a lesser team last week while Detroit proved they belong. The Lions have legitimate weapons on offense and a defense talented enough to give the Seahawks problems. On a side note, Geno Smith panicking seeing Aaron Donald B-Lining at him was the most relatable thing a quarterback has ever done. I'm all set with that too. Detroit ftw

IND @ HOU: HOU -1.5

Blind Owl: Gross. Do I have to pick this one? I suppose I do. I’ll take the Colts with the point and a half.

Concret3Cowboy: Indy showed some huevos last week against the Jags.. but really? Houston is favored? I hate Stroud, I know thats usually the Owl’s hill to die on (hating Ohio State QBs). But CJ is ass. Richardson was over the top in his debut, he’s got tools but he’s got to learn that the NFL is a LONG season and there is a reason why pocket QBs were so popular in the league for so long. Less hits = More time being healthy and playing. I like Indy to cover here.

BrendawnoftheDead: I won't lie, I don't think either of these quarterbacks are going to be any good long term. With that out of the way, Stroud has slightly more talent around him and a slightly more stable organization…slightly. I guess I'm going Houston?

CHI @ TB: TB -2.5

Blind Owl: Again, another grotesque matchup. I trusted Chicago to beat up on the Packers and they let me down. Tampa on the other hand beat the Vikings when they had no business doing that. There will be no more picking Chicago for me. Give me the Bucs.

Concret3Cowboy: Tampa has a very good defense, I feel like I’ve been saying that for a few years. That gives them a chance in every game. Chicago is ass, just dumpster fire of a franchise and it’s a real shame when you remember how old and storied a franchise they are. Tampa wins by multiple scores.

BrendawnoftheDead: Tampa reminded us that the Vikings will never change. Mayfield is fighting for his career in this league and their defense ain't half bad. You know who is bad? Justin Fields as a passer. You all got fooled this off-season. Yes his highlights are great but that doesn't show you his lack of accuracy and ability to go through his progressions. He is now 5 and 21 as a starter and I expect that will be 5 and 22 after Sunday.

NYG @ ARI: NYG -4

Blind Owl: The Giants got the shit kicked out of them. There’s no hiding that. Having said that, this is the easiest pick of the week. The G-Men will win big.

Concret3Cowboy: Week 2 picks are tough, it's all overreaction from week 1 with really nothing to control your expectations against. This spread has dropped a good bit through the week. There is something to say about where the Cardinals are. Everyone knows they are tanking but there are players still on that team that want to play in the NFL. Every week is their pre season to show their worth for the league. I like the Cardinals to cover, for no reason but the human will from desperation.

BrendawnoftheDead: The Giants never showed up last week and got absolutely embarrassed. Demolished actually. The Cardinals are actively trying to lose, so I can't in good conscience pick them despite the JV level performance out of a once respected professional team a week ago. Begrudgingly taking the GMEN to cover.

SF @ LAR: SF -7

Blind Owl: San Fran is the class of the NFC. Imagine if they didn’t waste picks to get Trey Lance how good they would be.The spread is big, but SF is that good. 9ers all the way.

Concret3Cowboy: If the Rams had any kind of home field advantage I may be against this spread. Having celebrities in the stands doesn’t help the product on the field. Expect a Purdy good win from San Fran.

BrendawnoftheDead: Big boy spread here but SF is the real deal. They have no real weakness when healthy and they are healthy. The Rams looked surprisingly good a week ago, but against a much lesser squad with a much worse defense. San Fran rolls

NYJ @ DAL: DAL -8.5

Blind Owl: Dallas are the Cowboys, not the Cougars, so Zack Wilson won’t be able get on top. Big D wins by a lot.

Concret3Cowboy: I don’t know about this. Dallas beat a divisional team opponent that a lot of people (me too) were high on going into the season. The Jets barely scraped by an imploding Bills team at home on Monday Night Football. Jets have a good roster, and Wilson is a talented kid. But Dallas also has some studs on their team. Dallas wins and covers.

BrendawnoftheDead: Josh Allen is better than Dak and he struggled mightily vs the Jets defense. I expect much the same out of Mr. Prescott. I don't know if the Jets can win, but I can see them losing by a TD in a tough game. Team green

NO @ CAR: NO -3

Blind Owl: Another tough one this week. The Monday Night Football double header starts with a battle for the worst division in the NFL. I’m not huge on either team here, but New Orleans is a little bit better. Saints I guess?

Concret3Cowboy: Hey, another Bama QB that is ass. He had 146 yards, a pick and a QBR of 48.8 against the Falcons… The Saints aren’t going to be any nicer to him. Saints by 10.

BrendawnoftheDead: I don't think New Orleans is going anywhere fast but they are better than Carolina in all phases. Carolina is young and might figure it out eventually, but now is not that time. Carr might have one of those games that makes him seem like a top tier quarterback, but that will surely be followed by an absolute stinker. I like New Orleans to win comfortably through the air.

CLE @ PIT: CLE -2.5

Blind Owl: I know it’s the Browns but their defense looked fantastic against Cincy. Watson seemed better than last year. Maybe he’s back to getting rubdowns? But it is the Browns and like Minnesota, they are destined to disappoint. Cleveland’s defense will continue to be suffocating. Pittsburgh doesn’t have the firepower to beat that good D. The week will end with a big Browns win and I’ll be in bed long before it ends.

Concret3Cowboy: That Browns defensive line is real. Kenny is going to have a long day and a lot of grass stains by the end of it. I don’t like Watson, I think he’s about done being a starting QB but the Browns defense is real. The short fields are going to help the Browns offense and the doggy-elves win by a healthy margin.

BrendawnoftheDead:...ummm this is a tough one. I don't think Pittsburgh is as bad as they looked last week and I don't think Cleveland is as good as they looked last week. That typically results in a dogfight and that's what I see happening here. I really want to pick Cleveland but I think Pittsburgh gets to DeShaun Watson enough to cause problems. Pittsburgh wins but barely.
